OYO - on your own but not alone “One can never solve problems using the same way of thinking that caused them.” – Albert Einstein
Two extreme developments have formed the starting points for this design: the shortage of low-cost housing and a vast excess of office space. Confronted with these phenomenona we'd like to re-think space, rules and money.
We are diverse and we cannot count on financial stability and growth like other generations. But we do have housing needs and desires, which the current system cannot provide for. We do want to live in the cities that need our young workpower. The slow and rigid bureaucratic and financing systems are in favour of other groups. Demographic changes and social independence have created new forms of households, but the market hasn't taken notice. We want to reconcile these different influences and live in flexible communities. Even if it's on an old office floor.
Our project deals out space in a new way. We want it to be safe, comfortable and BIG. There is enough such space vacant out there to live out a bit BIGGER. Design should help to adapt to the conditions of surroundings and compensate the substandard basis or absent location with inner qualities. Why not start a sustainable village community with an adventure?
Building is a very costly adventure, resulting in certain “standards” the “client” can usually take for granted. But there is abundant space and we have ideas. And a little money. We reconsider our standards and try to gain different qualities, for example the freedom to arrange things like we want to. Poor, but sexy also means that we want an esthetic and friendly environment. Design should help to adapt to the conditions of the surroundings and compensate the poor state or absent location with inner qualities.
